Commander Ben Hall is a 35-year veteran of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department. Starting as a Correctional Officer in 1975, he advanced through the ranks, becoming a Deputy, Detective, Sergeant, Assistant Jail Commander, Civil Division Commander and is currently serving as a Patrol Division Commander. Ben's experience and knowledge of the Sheriff's Department is unparalleled. He has run the South County Substation in Oceano and the Coast Substation. He has supervised the county jail complex and the courthouse security detail, and headed up the department headquarters, which includes dispatch, crime prevention, special problems unit, and the DARE program in our schools. As Assistant Jail Commander, Ben Hall helped resolve prison overcrowding conditions and developed a jail policies manual addressing such subjects as custody classification, use of force, and inmate grievances. As Civil Commander, he navigated essential reforms of the Department's relationship with the court system and the District Attorney's Family Support Division and improved court security. As Patrol Commander, he has created new training policies and procedures for instructing and evaluating new Patrol Sergeants, developed a computer-based system to streamline the enforcement of parking violations, brought local and state government officials together to solve community problems, and, working with residents and local businesses helped create a safer environment in our neighborhoods and at community events. Commander Hall holds an MBA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, a BA in Criminal Justice from Sacramento State University, and an AA degree from Cuesta College.
