Statement of J. MANUEL HERRERA, Candidate for
Member, San Jose City Council, District 5

Occupation: Governing Board Member, East Side Union High School District
Education and Qualifications:                 Age: 61
Vote Herrera - Experience That Money Can't Buy!
My parents were migrant workers who settled here in 1952. I grew up on the Eastside, attending McCollum, Lester Shields, and Pala schools and graduating from Overfelt High. This is my home. I love our community.
As an East Side Union High School District Board Trustee for 20 years, I've supported strong city-schools partnerships. As your councilmember I'll fight for a Safe, Successful, Stronger Eastside. This means gang prevention for safer neighborhoods and schools. It means a new era of police-community relations, founded on mutual respect that unites us to achieve greater public safety. Promoting green jobs and economic development is my priority for stronger small businesses. I'll champion the people's voice and grassroots democracy over insider politics.
Education: BA-Social Sciences, MA-Urban Studies. Experience includes: Director of Planning-United Way of the Bay Area; Ombudsman, City of San Jose. Endorsements include: San Jose Federation of Teachers; East Side Teachers Association; La Raza Roundtable; Board of Trustees Esau Herrera and Dolores Marquez, Alum Rock School District; Trustee Frank Biehl, East Side Union High School District.
"Manuel has a history of listening to his constituency. He is by far the most qualified to represent District 5." Victor Garza, Chairperson, La Raza Roundtable.
