my goals/beliefsHello everyone My name is Scott Sellman, and just wanted to take time to introduce myself The position (Orange County Board of Education) I am running for is a NON-partisan position In all honesty and transparency, I do not belong to a political party, so therefore will not try and sway someone to vote for me due to any alignment with a party position, etc I just wanted to get my feet wet (so to speak) into the political arena in hopes I can make some positive changes for kids. One idea I would love to be able to implement if I get the opportunity would be making it a requirement for all High-School students to take a class in Critical Thinking. This would be so that they are better equipped to understand what they learn-----thereby being able to articulate that knowledge to others for more efficient communication throughout their life. I have found out far too often that even the "so-called straight A" kids can hardly carry on a meaningful conversation about anything of substance. With just one class in "Critical Thinking", this would change dramatically. And in actuality, most students WANT to be challenged intellectually. I would also hope to implement more community and charitable involvement into our school system---with trying to engage businesses with incentives to be involved with our schools as well I believe that our children are in an era where they have so many more advantages than generations past....but along with that come greater challenges as well. The most obvious of these examples is the internet. Social networking (facebook, myspace, etc) have made it much easier for regular childish behavior to have much greater consequences in these forums I will not endorse anything that appears to be just basic knee-jerk reactions for these social networking problems, but do believe that an exhaustive, earnest and sensible approach needs to be done to curb so much of the abuses that are being done in this area A little about me----My background since graduating USC in 1991 includes being a Journalist, schoolteacher, Stock and Commodities broker, Mortgage and Real Estate broker, Property Manager.....and upcoming restaurant owner in Lake Forest(http://www.miloscafe.com) With a diverse background as mentioned above, I would hope I could use some of these talents to help our community Thanks for your time in reading this, and I hope you will consider voting for me for the Orange County Board of Education Your "neighbor" Scott Sellman Website is http://www.miloandjakeendorse.com |
