Several times in my life I have been honored to take an oath to protect and defend the Constitutions of the United States and the State of California, and every time I put on my judicial robe I remind myself of that oath. A judge's job is to make decisions not to make laws. The Constitution vested lawmaking authority with Congress and the Legislature with limited judicial review, chiefly by the appellate courts.
As a trial judge in the Superior Court I will have the opportunity to preside over all types of cases, and as I have since 1980, I will continue to treat everyone who appears before me with dignity and respect. I know that virtually every person who enters my courtroom whether as a witness, crime victim, litigant, juror or attorney is anxious about the court proceedings, and I make every effort to diffuse that anxiety by being courteous and kind in my demeanor. I always take the time to explain the reasons for my rulings and make sure that I do so in language that everyone understands.
