El Dorado County, CA | June 8, 2010 Election |
The Assessor's Role in County GovernmentBy Karl WeilandCandidate for Assessor; County of El Dorado | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
What does the Assessor do?El Dorado County has over 100,000 parcels, over 35,000 timeshare vacation intervals in South Lake Tahoe, and thousands of businesses, boats, mining claims, airplanes and other assessable property. The 2009 combined value of all this assessable property was over $27 billion dollars. That $27 billion dollars generated about $280 million dollars in property taxes that went to support fire, sheriff and public safety, schools and education, seniors, roads, trails parks and other county services and programs. The Assessor has three main responsibilities: 1) To maintain that $27 billion dollar inventory, tracking changes of ownership, construction permits, family and estate planning, and all the other things people do with property in the course of ownership. 2) To turn over accurate and timely assessment rolls based on fair and impartial assessments, that reflect declines in value under Prop 8, allowed base year transfers and exemptions and in all respects comply with the requirements of California Property Tax Law. 3) To accomplish the above with the wise and efficient use of taxpayer dollars in managing the office of the Assessor. The Assessor has a number of other responsibilities. These include representing El Dorado County in the California Assessors Association and advocating for fair, impartial, effective and efficient property tax law and admninistration. The Assessor has an obligation to participate in community events and affairs, and to be accessible to the public at times and places convenient to the public. Thank You |
