Ms. Covington began her service to the people of Philadelphia over eleven years ago when she accepted a position in the litigation division of the City of Philadelphia Law Department as an Assistant City Solicitor. During her seven year tenure with the City Law Department, Ms. Covington represented the Police Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Department of Human Services, The Office of Mental Health, and Parks & Recreation on matters of liability, contract, administrative and regulatory law. She subsequently served as Legal Counsel for the Philadelphia Housing Authority where she managed all aspects of litigation involving tenancies of public housing. She has been practicing law over 15 years. She started her career in Washington, D.C. where she worked as a Prosecutor for the District of Columbia Office of Corporation Counsel. She then worked in the non-profit field as Legal Director and lobbyist with the Feminist Majority Foundation for women's and Civil Rights issues. Her experiences led her to become a Child Advocate Attorney for the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, representing children in abuse and neglect hearings. Ms. Covington is currently in private practice as a senior trial attorney at the Center City law firm of Zarwin Baum concentrating in the casualty defense practice. She has handled over 1000 hearings, arbitrations and mediations. She has tried twelve major level jury and bench trials resulting in eight defense verdicts. She is also an adjunct professor at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management of Temple University. She is a Certified Arbitrator and was selected to serve in Judge Pro Temp for the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. She was listed in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers + Rising Stars 2005. Roxanne Covington has dedicated most of her legal career to public service and public interest work. She served as a Commissioner with the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations from 2006-2008 on the 3 member panel issuing the decision in the controversial Geno's Steak Hearing. Presently she sits on the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority, the Housing Association of Delaware Valley and Inter Act Theater Company. She is a member of the Executive Board of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Bar Association + Women Lawyer's Division. Ms. Covington is a diligent attorney and zealous advocate. She is seeking election to judicial office because it is her desire to serve the citizens of Philadelphia, and bring the same dedication to our communities and passion for justice to the bench. |
