Alan Butkovitz was first elected Philadelphia City Controller in 2005. Prior to that, he served 15 years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives where he acquired a reputation for hard work, independence and innovative solutions to pressing problems.

Alan Butkovitz brought that same hard work, independence and focus on innovative thinking and smart ideas to the City Controller's Office.

Over the last three years, Controller Butkovitz has tripled the number of annual performance audits conducted by the Controller's Office from two to six - and in the process has identified over $413 million in savings and new revenues for the city.

Controller Butkovitz also developed a long-range plan to help the city address the current financial crisis by saving an estimated $200 million over the next five years.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, "CONTROLLER ALAN BUTKOVITZ has an idea that will save the city $172 million over five years. . . . his innovative idea, embraced and announced by Mayor Nutter . . . is a classic example of the kind of market expertise that we need in a controller.

The plan lowers the city's assumed rate of return on the pension fund, which means it needs to fork out less money to meet its obligations. . . . it's a sound short-term solution."

The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, "City Controller Alan Butkovitz has identified upward of $400 million to be reaped over five years from onetime collections and other recurring savings. On pensions, there was encouraging news . . . when Nutter signed on to Butkovitz's proposal to stretch out the city's pension payments. Harrisburg lawmakers should give that the required thumbs-up."

City Controller Butkovitz has also steadfastly opposed any attempt by the Board of Revision and Taxes to conduct a planned citywide full-value reassessment of all residential properties in the city. He believes such a full-value reassessment would have castrophic consequences for local neighborhoods - by dramatically increasing local property taxes - especially during our current economic and financial crisis - and forcing many financially strapped homeowners - especially seniors - to have to sell their homes in one of the worst housing markets in decades.

Alan Butkovitz was born and raised in Philadelphia, he is a graduate of Overbrook High School, Temple University and Temple University School of Law. He lives with his wife Theresa and their two children Rachel and Edward in Northeast Philadelphia.
