Why I am running for School Board Director

By Frank J. Kerber

Candidate for School Director; Upper Saint Clair School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The USC school district is facing some critical issues in the coming months, including negotiation of a new teachers contract, renovation proposals for the middle schools, administrative reorganization, and the scope of the IB Program at the elementary school level. Board action on these items requires thoughtful, transparent, cooperative work among the Board directors, the school administration and the parent community.
When I decided to retire from the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State in 2006, we moved from our home in Northern Virginia to Upper St. Clair for several reasons: my wife Melanie is from here and went through the USC school system; her parents live here in Brookside Farms; and we wanted our son to take advantage of the International Baccalaureate Program offered at the high school. When a position on the School Board opened in September due to the resignation of Dr. Iraki, I put myself forward as a candidate because I wanted to somehow pay back the district for the excellent education my son is receiving. Having served as a Director for six months, I have decided to renew my commitment and run for a full term. I think I bring unique set of skills and experience to the position. First of all, I am relatively new to the district and therefore bring a fresh approach to the issues. Secondly, my twenty-six years in the Foreign Service have given me a global perspective. On several of my tours I was responsible for managing multi-million dollar budgets. I have over ten years' experience in secondary education as a teacher and staff member at high schools in Cincinnati, Maryland, and locally at Sewickley Academy and in my current position as Director of College Placement at Central Catholic High School. In addition, I am an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs where I teach two courses. I also serve on the Board of the Center for International Legal Education at Pitt Law School and am vice president of the parent board for the USC Crew team. Education issues are a constant topic of conversation in our home as my wife is principal of Sto-Rox High School. Our first obligation is to the students. In addition, given these difficult economic times, we must look at each decision with a few to strict fiscal responsibility. I hope the voters of the district give me the opportunity to continue to serve in the important post of School Board Director.
