At a community gathering last week, Trustee Robert Dorsey said chances are less than 1 in 10. Earlier he had said the site had a 50 percent chance to win approval. Residents were concerned about traffic safety and the destruction of green space if a firehouse were to be built at the southeast corner of Birney and Salem. The one acre which the trustees have an option to buy is wooded and home to birds, rabbits and squirrels. "While many of us understood where the township was in the process, it was important for the residents to hear it from a township representative," said Greg Delev , an attorney and spokesman for the residents. Henry Dolive, township administrator, explained the township process to the residents. He said population growth requires the township to find new firehouse locations and that Birney and Salem was only one alternative. The township intends to relocate the existing firehouse on Salem near Beechmont closer to Salem and Sutton Road in order to give better coverage to the Coney Island-River Downs area. Another site is to be chosen for a firehouse to serve the Turpin Hills area. Residents in the Birney and Salem area have been circulating petitions, which will be presented to the trustees at the next trustee meeting, Delev said.
