|
Bob Hyland was born July 21, 1945 in White Plains, a graduate of Archbishop Stepinac ('63) and Boston College (`67). He has distinguished himself locally as a successful businessman during White Plains retail resurgence for over 36 years. Hyland was an offensive lineman in the National Football League for eleven seasons, only the second rookie to start for Vince Lombardi. A member of the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers in 1967, this lifelong White Plains resident played for the Chicago Bears, New York Giants, and the New England Patriots. Residents of Westchester County have known Bob Hyland as the proprietor of the Sports Page since 1981. Voted Westchester's Favorite Sports Theme Restaurant by Westchester Magazine every year since 1997, the Sports Page has been a genuine part of the commercial renaissance in White Plains. "I remind my friends that the job has required me to meet over 1,900 weekly payrolls," observed Hyland. "I live with the daily responsibility of fulfilling obligations to employees and staff, as well as being responsible to pay a myriad of business taxes." Hyland's business experience has included over sixteen years as a financial consultant and underwriter with Northwestern Mutual Life and Massachusetts Mutual. Since 1993, he has been no stranger to crunching numbers on health or life insurance and employee benefits. Bob married Liz O'Brien in December, 1975. They are the proud parents of four children. All three boys graduated Stepinac and his daughter is a sophomore at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle. Michael (31) is a graduate the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kevin (25) is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and Dennis (29), a graduate of Mercy College, manages the Sports Page with Hyland and his wife. A parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows in White Plains, Hyland has taken great pride in being involved in his local parish and maintaining close ties with Stepinac. "I'm indebted to Stepinac and to White Plains for shaping me as a young man," said Hyland. "Nothing has made me happier than to raise my children in this city and also see my sons graduate from a school I truly have called home over the years." His choice to run for the Westchester County Board of Legislators came after years of being approached by civic leaders, neighbors and friends to consider public service. "I had a family to raise, a business to run and those priorities came first before any politics," Hyland explained. "I'm at a point in my life now where giving back to the community is important to me. We're the highest taxed county in the nation. The hardworking taxpayers of White Plains and Scarsdale deserve a responsive public servant who will make a difference. |
