Barb Pavicic -
"Lory Lawson has proved to be a strong fiscal manager of our district resources. She understands the budget issues facing our school district. Lory's been a school board member for four years, each year making the difficult choices necessary for our district to balance the budget. The budget process is brutal, pitting one set of needs against another, one program against another, one employment group against another. She's sat through hundreds of meetings listening to parents, teachers, district staff, and community members describe the benefit of and advocate for a special program, teacher, staffing level, transportation, after-school-care, facility, or service provider. Throughout this gut-wrenching process, Lory's always been respectful, compassionate and patient. Lory makes wise decisions that support teaching and learning, benefiting the needs of all our students. She's open-minded and considerate of all possible solutions to issues, without rushing prematurely to final decisions.

Lory's provided leadership in addressing the complex issues facing the school district. She's involved the community as the district wrestles with the issues of unbalanced school populations and facility improvements. She nurtures successful partnerships with parents, neighborhoods, community organizations, and our cities. She's worked hard for the recruitment and retention of quality staff by supporting professional development and encouraging site-based leadership. She knows our teachers, students, and staff, having visited all of our schools multiple times.

On a personal level, I appreciate Lory's perspective as a parent. As parents, we tend to get caught-up in the smaller lens of our child's classroom experience. Lory's kids are a little older than mine, so she's looking at our school system with a much wider lens. As a board member, Lory's perspective is invaluable. She is able to see the "big picture" and works for the very best education of all of our kids. Lory's dedication, personal knowledge, experience, and wisdom make her an ideal school board member."

Michael Nagler -
"Lory was the person who asked me to come onto the Education Foundation Board. At the time, I really wasn't sure what the Board did--but I figured if Lory Lawson was asking me to join something than it was worth joining, no questions asked. Everybody knows there's nobody like Lory. It's rare to work with someone who not only figures out how to get the supplies across the river, but enthusiastically helps carry those supplies, too. And she knows how to listen to a roomful of people-a roomful of people trying to decide with the din of their voices whether to transport those supplies at noon or midnight-and speak back to them what it is they're saying they really want to do. This is a gift. Obviously, for Lory, public service is a calling of noble purpose. When you get involved with her you quickly come to understand that she believes a community should always be reaffirming what it means to be responsible for everyone else in that community-no matter the color of their skin or their cultural and economic background. This is the mark of a generous spirit. There's this line at the end "To Kill A Mockingbird" that says how you can never really get to know anyone until you've tried walking around in their shoes. When you hang out with Lory, she makes sure you do this. That's a gift, too."
