Matt W. Smith Board Member, Temple City Unified School District

Serving in his eleventh year as a member of TCUSD's Board of Education, Matt Smith is a two time past President, and three time past Vice President of the school board, in addition to serving several stints as both Board Clerk and Board Member at large. Matt was re-elected to his current term in 2005.

Matt earned his Master's in Business Administration (MBA) degree from California State University - Los Angeles in 1984, his Bachelor's of Science (BS) degree from San Diego State University in 1979 and his Associate of Arts (AA)degree from Foothill Junior College in 1977. He is also a graduate of the California School Board Association's Masters in Governance Program.

The proud parents of three active boys (ages 17, 20, and 23), Matt and his wife, Janet, have been residents of the Temple City community for almost 28 years. Both Matt and Janet have been active in leading and supporting numerous TCUSD and youth sports activities (managing teams, coaching, team Mom, etc.). Matt is currently serving as President of the TC Ramrodders Football Boosters fundraising organization and Janet is President of Temple City Council PTA.

Matt's oldest son, Kyle, graduated from Temple City High School in 2004, and California State University, Fullerton in 2008, and is now teaching music education in La Canada Unified School District. His second son, Cary, graduated from TCHS in 2006 and is currently a junior attending UC Berkeley while their youngest son, Collin, is a senior at TCHS.

In addition to his activities with TCUSD and serving the youth in his community, Matt is also on the board of the Temple City Chamber of Commerce, the Chair of the San Gabriel Valley Legislative Coalition of Chambers, and active in Kiwanis International.

In 2009, Matt received the highest honor California State PTA bestows, the Golden Oak Award for his outstanding service to children and youth in the Temple City community. In addition, both he and Janet received Temple City Council PTA's Honorary Service Award in 1999 for their service to the community.
