"A Welcome from Patricia - A Fresh Perspective, New Ideas"

Hi! I'm Patricia Siever, a candidate for the Culver City Unified School Board. I am also, the proud wife of Dr. Luther Henderson, and the "seasoned" mother of four children, all of whom graduated from Culver City Schools. I want to tell you a little about my family's life as residents of Culver City for 30+ years.

My family moved to Culver City for two main reasons: (1) Good schools and (2) the "sense of community" that we found in Culver City. Our entire family has been active in many Culver City organizations and community events. My husband, Luther, was a member of the Culver City Cultural Affairs Commission for eight years and twice chair. And, our children were participants in many extra-curricular activities while attending Culver schools, for example:

  • Girls Junior and Senior Varsity Basketball and Volleyball teams

  • Boys Junior and Senior Varsity Basketball team.

  • Culver City High School Marching Band (daughter played flute, son played tenor drum)

  • CC Teen Center, YMCA, Pop Warner Little League, etc.

As a working mother, in addition to being involved in my children's schools and activities, I have also become involved with local community organizations and activities, for example (visit the website, below, for my educational and professional experience):

  • VP of the PTA ( Program Chairman)

  • Member and Vice President, Board of Governors - Brotman Medical Center

  • Membership, Friends of the Library

  • Membership, CC Historical Society

  • Member, CC Chamber of Commerce

  • Member, CC Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee

  • Soccer Mom (AYSO) & Parent leader of several of my children's groups.

  • Membership Chair, Blair Hills Homeowners Association

  • Member, CC Sister Cities Committee

  • Member, League of Women Voters

In addition to all the above, my family has played an active part in SERVAS, International, which is an international peace organization of hosts and hostesses around the world.

So, you may ask, why are you running for the CCUSD School Board? Well, I've dedicated my life to Education and to our youth. I've taught over 15,000 students, and they are all over the world, e.g., working with the homeless in Oakland, missionaries in Mexico, lawyers, artists, etc. So, my 30+ years in education, activism, experience and leadership on the state (Sacramento) and local levels, leads me to offer my service, knowledge and commitment to our Culver City youth, from kindergarten through college. Our students must be able to successfully compete academically and financially with the realities that exist in the world, which is fast becoming the "Global Neighborhood."

Specifically, my priorities as a Board member are: (1) to help expedite CCUSD's academic movement toward excellence; (2) to fight for full funding for Culver City's schools from Sacramento; (3) to work to maintain competitive salaries for teachers and staff; (4) foster intergenerational, intersegmental, and city business and governance alliances and (5) strive to ensure that all of our students get the best education possible so that they can become full functioning participants in the ever-expanding and dynamic "Global Neighborhood."
