Meet Tom Chavez

By Tom Chavez

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Cerritos Community College District

This information is provided by the candidate
Tom will use his extensive experience at Cerritos College to bring a higher quality of education, and improve morale on campus while ensuring that your tax dollars are wisely spent.
Tom Chavez, a community oriented person born and raised in the district, attended Cerritos College and then transferred to UCLA. He has a daughter currently attending Cerritos College, and a son who recently transferred to UCLA.

Tom has been volunteering in K-12 classrooms, school site councils, and music programs for 15 years. He also served as president of the Gahr High School Band Booster Association for five years. A 26 year Cerritos College employee and campus leader, Tom has served extensively on campus-wide committees including: Presidential Hiring, Planning and Budget, and Strategic Planning. Tom served for two years at the Board of Trustees table as a non-voting employee representative.

In 2004, voters approved Cerritos College's $210 million General Obligation Bond measure. Since that time, official reports suggest that the college is not effectively transferring students to universities, and that there is a continuing problem with shared governance. Accreditation reports also suggest that communication between the Board of Trustees and the Administration is not effective. Tom will use his extensive experience at Cerritos College to bring a higher quality of education, and improve morale on campus while ensuring that your tax dollars are wisely spent.
