Adolescents are very open to external pressures and strong influences such as military recruiters. As a school district we need to work to ensure that any military recruitment is continuously balanced with alternate recruitment experiences; i.e. college fairs, sports recruiters, career fairs, etc. The presence of these resources at our schools must be rich, diverse, and ongoing.
Unfortunately we are bound by the state to the essential funds provided by the No Child Left Behind Act. While we may not have the option to end the recruitment on campus, we can take other action to prepare our students so that they are well-equipped to encounter it. We can also continue to refine and evaluate the "Opt Out" procedure so that students and parents understand their school environment and the options available to them.
