I will work to see that Pennsylvania develops an energy policy appropriate our times.Pennsylvania was the birthplace of the first commercial oil drilling operation in the mid 19th century. One hundred and fifty years later, we have not made major advances in energy production despite rapid development of other technologies such as communications. It is not that other technologies have not emerged. In my opinion, they have been repressed. Do you remember Arco/solar? Oil, coal and gas are all finite resources and by definition will one day be exhausted. Nuclear energy from uranium creates dangerous by products. They are all extracted from the earth and negatively impact the environment. Today, the time is right for renewable sources of energy. Solar, wind, geothermal and micro-hydro electric are becoming increasingly more attractive as electric and natural gas prices continue to rise and the costs of renewable technologies falls. These technologies are far less harmful to our environment, do not generate green house gases and therefore do not contribute to global warming. Pennsylvania has the opportunity and the responsibility to implement an energy policy for the 21st century. Governor Rendell has made a commitment to wind energy as well as hybrid vehicles and I commend him for that. The General Assembly has approved spending $600 million on alternative energy. However, we can and must do better. PP&L is proposing spending $8 Billion on one nuclear plant. All of our schools have rooftops that could be fitted with solar panels to generate energy for the school. There is also room for wind turbines. Excess energy could be sold to the power companies. This would save money for taxpayers as well as create jobs. Not only schools but public libraries and other public buildings could become solar generators as well. All new construction paid for with taxpayer money should also incorporate renewable energy sources in their construction including geothermal heating and cooling. The state vehicle fleet should consist of not only hybrid, but, electric vehicles. Only electric vehicles release zero emissions. Hybrid vehicles are only a stopgap measure. Ethanol's production is inefficient. Biodiesel will also fill a need, but, I do not believe we should be using corn when we could use hemp. Hemp prohibition must be lifted so it can be used for oil, fiber and food. Pennsylvania should implement generous tax incentives for individuals and businesses to foster the use of renewable technologies and reduce green house gases. If I am elected I will work to see that Pennsylvania develops an energy policy appropriate our times. |
