Character Education-The Service Learning ComponentBy Ann B. PierceCandidate for Board Member; Alpine Union School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Students learn, develop character and give back to the community. To me, one of the most exciting aspects of Alpine's Character Education grant is the focus on Service Learning. "Service-learning is a philosophy, pedagogy, and model for community development that is used as an instructional strategy to meet learning goals and/or content standards." Visit this website to learn more: http://www.nylc.org In essence, it's collaborative, creative, hands-on learning that offers students opportunities to experience success coupled with generosity, as they learn and in turn give back to the greater community. While developing character and a sense of personal/social responsibility, service learning also hones leadership skills in our young people. I am a committee member in the district and have been involved in science related projects at our middle school. More projects are in the planning stages and I am currently working on grant proposals that will allow us to purchase equipment and develop curriculum to further our service learning goals. I look forward to working with a broader range of students this year! |
