Facts About Current City Improvements

By Bill Goulet

Candidate for Council Member; City of National City

My view of the City's Campaign to defeat Proposition M
I have attended a number of debates on Proposition M invoving the Mayor and tax activists.

The Mayor always brings up all the recent developments in the city which have finally come to fruition. He seems to imply such projects would not have come to be had it not been for our sales tax increase. The truth of the matter is all the projects he is talking about were underway years before the sales tax hike.

The current street resurfacing project is being paid for by our gas taxes and government grants. The sales tax hike had nothing to do with it. It would have happened regardless of we had decided to vote this tax down 2 years ago.

Projects like The Marina, Plaza Bonita Expansion and a number of Condominium Communities would have come along regardless of the tax increase.

They claim services like the library , the pool, and the parks would take cuts if proposition M passes. I don't believe that. Cuts in unnecessary staff and reexamining other revenue streams such as redevelopment zones and fees can keep services at their current levels.

They have claimed public safety would be put at risk. Nothing could be farther from the truth. We have a 4 million dollar surplus. We would have to wipe that out and then some before it came to that.

We can always come back to the public with a lower sales tax hike should a crisis emerge. The city is not facing an economic crisis but you are. Vote 'YES' on Proposition M.
