FARRAH'S STORY In 1979 my native country, Iran, was engulfed in turmoil and revolution. Rick, my husband of nearly four years, our two-year old son and I endured many harrowing experiences before being evacuated. We were among the very last Americans to leave - on the final flight from Iran shortly before the U.S. hostages were taken. With only one suitcase we fled my war-torn country. Having lost my childhood home, my country, and my sense of belonging, I felt blessed to be safe and to have a future. In Iran, I had put myself through college earning a B.A. degree in English and French Literature/Translation and then had worked as a journalist, reporter, writer and a translator/interpreter. With education as an important value, I wanted to continue my studies. After learning to drive - on El Camino Real before traffic lights and development - I attended Mira Costa College and Palomar College while obtaining a real estate license and working as a real estate agent, then enrolled in San Diego State University, where I studied towards a Masters Degree in Philosophy and was elected to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. After arriving in the United States, Rick and I struggled to create a new life for our son and plan a better future for our family. Nearly 20 years ago, our plans brought us to Carlsbad, where we established a small business. The very first day we opened the doors, our income was 50 cents. Yes, only 50 cents! We have worked hard and I am proud that our business has survived despite many trying economic times. During this time, Rick and I also had a sincere focus on creating and maintaining a trustworthy and respected name in the community. I volunteered in local service clubs and organizations with a passionate desire to contribute to the well being of the community. Never for a single day since I arrived in the United States - not a single day - have I taken for granted the freedoms and quality of life in our country and our community. I am living the American dream; here I have found security, freedom and opportunity. Gradually I have also found a sense of belonging. I arrived as a woman with no country ... and came to love this country. Here our baby boy has grown into a well educated, successful and distinguished man, who is married to an equally remarkable woman. For Rick and me, this is our proudest accomplishment. I have realized great enjoyment and satisfaction through my efforts in public service. Now, the spirit of service I've exhibited during the past 20 years has led me to the decision to seek office as a member of the City Council. With my business background, my knowledge of our city, my global outlook and understanding, my open door policy, my commitment to listen and understand your concerns and issues and my honest and thoughtful leadership style, I will be a diligent and productive council member, who understands the true meaning of public service. In partnership with you, I will help create an exciting and bright future for all of us, while honoring what we've already accomplished in Carlsbad. |
