Let's Continue to Empower our Children

By Tyler Bourcier

Candidate for Board Member; Bonny Doon Union Elementary School District; 4 Year Term

This information is provided by the candidate
As a Bonny Doon community member, I recognize the Elementary School as one of the foundations of our region- where the future spends their days, and the families of the area connect to change the present for the better. As a Montessorian, I understand the education of children to be a practice of peace and action.

As a teacher, I recognize the passion, diversity, and power of children. I wish to see our school even further value the uniqueness of how each child learns. While we teachers acknowledge this, it is often difficult to put ideas into practice. I believe that it is possible to allow and encourage individualized and differentiated instruction to the degree that honors our children and their unique gifts.

Our son was recently born during the Martin Fire, so I can now say, "As a parent...!" What a crazy summer! We all have ideas, but as a parent, I want to ensure that my son, and all of the other Elementary School children, are heard and understood for who they are. I practice everyday how to celebrate and better appreciate growth and change in my son, in addition to the children I work with. At Bonny Doon we have so many gifts already, and I hope to help teachers reach their ideals as professionals. Teachers who are passionate, should be assisted so that they can bring back their excitement to our children.

From Science Labs to the retention of teachers, my experience parallels the path our school is headed.
