Evaluate present Airport District Projects list for currency and responsible spending of Taxpayer dollars

By Hugh Rafferty

Candidate for Board Member; Santa Maria Public Airport District

This information is provided by the candidate
There are a number of projects that the current Airport District Board placed on master plan prior to the current economic decline. These projects should be reevaluated in the context of the current economy.
While the concept of an Airport Business Park as well as the construction of a new fire station at the SM Airport might well have been good ideas at the time they were initially proposed, the fact is that the residents of the Airport District now find themselves being affected by the current slowdown in the economy. Some have lost jobs and others have lost their homes. The last thing these taxpayers need at this time is to see their their tax dollars being spent on these very expensive projects.

It's true that the business park might bring additional jobs to the Santa Maria area, but they will most likely be hi-tech jobs, many of which might well be filled by current employees of the firms moving in rather than from the local population.

The proposed new fire station might easily be replaced by building an additional enclosure for the present station, giving better access to the airfield by current firefighting and rescue equipment.

I believe it's important that these projects be reevaluated, and put these items on hold until the new Board and the new General Manager can have made that determination.
