Candidate Statement

A brief summary of the candidate's background and objectives of his candidacy.

Thank you for exploring my qualifications and background in running for the position of Santa Maria Airport Board Director. I was born in Holland, Michigan but moved to Santa Monica, California at the age of four. I was raised in Southern California and went to high school in the San Fernando Valley. After graduation I attended Washington State University where I completed a double degree in Biology and Education. I returned to the San Fernando Valley and retained a position of Research Associate at California State University Northridge running the Electron Microscopy lab. During this time, in 1974, I was also able to fulfill a childhood dream of getting my Private Pilots license. Answering the call to higher education and service I attended The University of Southern California and obtained my professional degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. Seeking a place for professional growth and quality of life I decided to setup my dental practice in Santa Maria in 1980. The quality of the airport and surrounding community was a key factor in my decision to locate here. For the last 28 years I have practiced Dentistry in Santa Maria. I have enjoyed running my small business with my wife and raising our four beautiful children in this special community. I have expanded my practice, met payrolls and managed employees. I know how to run a business and how to budget, plan and live within my means - assets that can be applied to running the airport.

I have owned two aircraft. I understand FAA flight rules and procedures, how the control tower works and the needs for safe operation of air traffic at our airport. Aircraft ownership has made me familiar with the support businesses at our airport such as the paint shop , avionics shop and FBO's. I understand how their jobs work and what their needs are. I have the background and knowledge to direct, plan and manage our airport. I will safeguard its assets and help plan its future!

The main objectives of my candidacy are:

1. Balance the budget and stop the deficit spending before the reserves are gone.
2. Bring sound business practices to the decision process of the Board.
3. Promote the businesses at the airport while trying to expand Air Carrier service.
4. Return a cooperative atmosphere to the Board and Staff when dealing with the businesses and hanger tenants at the airport.
