Top Priorities (Concerns)

By Robert R. Nicklen

Candidate for Director; Coachella Valley Water District; Division 2

This information is provided by the candidate
Water Conservation, Adequate Water Supply and Water Quality
1) The Coachella Valley Water District has made some progress in water conservation, their Master Water Plan calls for conservation in agriculture, golf course irrigation, and commercial and residential water use, but the water savings are only modest, particularly for existing uses.

2) Water Supply availability was not adequate in their Master Plan in the year 2002 when it was completed because the implementation plan was stretched out to far in the future. The Plan is way behind now due to changes in weather projections and availability of imported water.

3) The Coachella Valley is dependent on local groundwater that has been overdrafted for years and Colorado River Water. The groundwater is mostly of very good quality. Colorado River water is generally not suitable for commercial or residential use, however, it is being used to resupply (recharge) the groundwater.

The District is in critical need of better planning.
