Fiscal stabilityBy Michael H. SimonsCandidate for Board Member; Huntington Beach Union High School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
Current State budget problems and pending declining enrollment are a challenge to the District's fiscal stabilty. The looming State budget problems and the District's demographers prediction of declining enrollment will challenge our budget. To address declining enrollment we been able to put $1.4 million into a special reserve fund to help lessen it's financial impact. Our fiscal status is sound as we have adequate reserves well above the mandated 3%. The Disrtict's positive financial status enabled the District to avoid the layoffs last year that were seen in many other school districts in California. The District also needs to maintain adequate additional maintainence reserves to keep up the facilities. We need to continue to closely monitor the State's financial condition and to continue a conservative budgeting strategy with adequate reserves. The District can monitor it's needs and priorities through a Strategic Planning process that includes parents, staff, community members and students. |
