Fundamental change in leadershipBy Michele MartinezCandidate for Mayor; City of Santa Ana | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
My focus is to defend and protect the best interests of my city's residents.1. The biggest issue confronting my city is the ongoing escalation of gang activity. Not only has this epidemic been a hindrance to public safety, it has also been an impediment to other areas of our city. Our businesses incur millions of dollars in damages every year from graffiti and vandalism. Furthermore, our education deeply suffers when our youth cannot attend school in a safe and clean environment. The city has been lethargic in responding to this significant problem. As mayor, I will not tolerate any gang activity. I will proactively respond to any gang-related crisis that erupts in the city. I am committed to breaking the counterproductive culture of our leaders who continue to stand by as this problem perpetuates. 2. I can offer positive change to the culture and effectiveness of the city's leadership. Complacency and negligence has settled into the present administration, which has been in office for over two decades. Our government has developed a combative behavior that no longer responds to the community's needs. I will strive to foster a new spirit of cooperation in our government and empower citizens. Our citizens are frustrated with the quality of service and lack of support they receive. These areas could be readily addressed by promoting a more inclusive environment. Additionally, we need to invigorate our approach to governing if we want to solve the crucial issues facing Santa Ana. As a Councilmember, I authored the Early Prevention and Intervention Commission to address issues related to gangs and at-risk youth. I also led the mobilization efforts to pass the Measure G school bond. This results-driven attitude is a quality that has been noticeably absent in my opponent. 3. I would bolster public safety by committing to and investing in community policing, which has proven to be one of the most effective ways to deter crime. Developing relationships with neighbors and identifying hot-spot areas allow officers to cultivate strategies that can address crime at its source. Furthermore, I will continue to support after-school programs and community outreach that help divert young people away from gangs and unlawful activities. I have contributed a considerable portion of my time and personal funds to scholarships and non-profit organizations. In addition, I want to address the need to promote wellness and sustainability in the community. Health problems can devastate families and lead to insecurity in neighborhoods. By creating an environment where people are encouraged to and can lead healthy lives, we can eliminate a core source of instability. |
