How we can improve our existing city parks and increase access for youth sports. In addition to being a small beach town, San Clemente is an ideal place to raise a family. My wife and I decided long ago that this is where we wanted our children to grow up. Given the recent growth in the city's population, our desire appears to be by no means unique. The new developments in San Clemente have brought a huge influx of young children in our community. The strain in our infrastructure is easily seen by examining the current state of our city park system and the high level of usage. For example, our youth sports programs which rely on our city to provide proper facilities for their activities is heavily impacted. We have situations where soccer games are scheduled for 8:00 AM on Sunday morning and baseball games that are played at 9:00 PM on a school night. The easiest answer to this solution is to complete the development of the sports complex at La Pata/Vista Hermosa. The city owned land across the street from the future sports complex is available for sale and the Target Corporation has expressed interest in buying the land. I support the sale of the land to Target. Not only will the store generate additional tax revenue to maintain and improve the quality of existing parks, the sale proceeds will fund the completion of Phase I of the sports complex. |
