3 Major Challenges Facing Fremont Unified School District

By Ivy Wu

Candidate for Board Member; Fremont Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
1. State Proposed Budget Cuts
2. Student Achievement
3. Student Housing
1. State Proposed Budget Cuts:

We need to be fiscally accountable. Don't spend money that we don't have; don't waste resources; continue to build relationship and lobby our state legislature to make our needs heard; promote understanding and partnership with the community.

2. Student Achievement:

With the increasing global-wise competition, and with the No Child Left Behind Act bar being raised every year, we need to make sure that all of our students are properly equipped to face the challenges, and our teachers properly trained to provide effective teaching. The achievement gap among some of the subgroups stems mainly from disparity of the social-economic or cultural opportunities. When we address the achievement problem, we need to also look at the circumstances and issues our students and families are facing. Good role modeling needs to be demonstrated by all educators to create a healthy learning environment that is conducive to good learning behavior.

3. Student Housing:

Overcrowding in some schools and attendance areas has not been and may not be resolved by more boundary changes. The problem is worsened by the growing residential developments in some of the most highly impacted attendance areas. To take care of the problem at its root, we need to a) make sure that all of our schools are good and desirable; b) seek partnership with the City and developers to build common understanding; c) inform and involve parents and community in developing strategies to make all our schools great.
