Biosolids RecyclingBy Dwight L. "Pat" HowardCandidate for Board Member; Dublin-San Ramon Community Services District | |

I believe biosolids recycling should be a district priority.DSRSD needs to continue development of our long-term biosolids program. Presently, DSRSD buries its biosolids on-site at its own facility. This site has a finite capability. Eventually, the site will be fully saturated with all the metals it can handle without affecting our valley ground waters. I strongly support biosolids recycling as a sound environmental solution not only for our district but for all similar districts throughout the west. Biosolids can become, with proper management, a resource rather than a liability. Biosolids recycling improves soil quality and improves the soil's ability to absorb and retain moisture. Biosolids can reclaim lands decimated by gravel mining. Biosolids can revitalize graze lands and can be recycled into compost. As a strong supporter of biosolids recycling I will work with the DSRSD board and staff to develop a long-term plan. I will also work with neighboring agencies to explore the development of a valley-wide biosolids recycling plan. For further information on the benefits of biosolids recycling please visit the web site of CASA, the California Association of Sanitary Agencies at http://www.casaweb.org. |
