Questions & Answers

1. High School drop-out rates are a big concern. What solutions do you have to make sure students graduate?

To address the dropout rate, I would implement a strong academic program in conjunction with activities that keep students connected to their school. This connection can be accomplished by offering co-curricular activities that can address a student's needs and interests and by encouraging students to develop meaningful relationships with teachers, councilors, administrators and school staff.

I know this can work because I have seen it first hand as a teacher at James Logan High School and in my work in education at NASA. Students that participate in school activities often develop better self esteem, develop better time management skills and have less time to engage in non-productive activities. Responsible adults can show students the road to success and can help students avoid the distractions that can derail their progress.

I have had the opportunity to help improve the lives of many young people and I'm proud to say that I keep in touch with many of them and relish in there successes.
