Immigration Reform

By Ronald R. St John

Candidate for United States Representative; District 46; Republican Party

This information is provided by the candidate
Illegal immigration leads to many serious problems and we need comprehensive reform that recognizes the benefit we get from legal immigration.
In our current system we have grown dependent on approximately 12 million illegal immigrants and we have created a de facto amnesty by nonenforcement of immigration laws. This is an unacceptable situation. To have 4% of our population without legal status, to have a nation within a nation of undocumented individuals, creates a black market for labor, impairs tax collection, interferes with law enforcement, and raises serious national security risks. It is also inhumane to the immigrant laborers themselves, who are deprived of dignity and living in fear.

The solution is a comprehensive immigration reform that will in substance sort out workers from criminals, deport criminals and give workers a decent status. This displaces illegal immigration with legal immigration, improves our tax base, and assists law enforcement.

Fundamental fairness and respect for the law make it important that any comprehensive reform not include any amnesty or special privileges based on prior illegal residence. No one should be rewarded for breaking the law. But no such rewards are necessary. It is possible without amnesty to look to the future and create an immigration system that protects national security and still realistically considers our labor needs and respects the many benefits that we get as we are honored to be the nation of first choice by hard-working immigrants.
