Ron St. John attended the University of Southern California on a National Merit Scholarship, and obtained degrees in philosophy and law. As a law student, St. John received the award for best publication by a law review editor for his article "Aggressive Innovation and Antitrust Liability."

St. John has practiced law for twenty-seven years, specializing in real estate, commercial and tax law. His published decisions include a California Supreme Court case defining how costs of government compliance are to be allocated in commercial leases, a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal case concerning taxation of income from foreign subsidiaries, and a California Court of Appeal case in which he successfully brought a constitutional challenge to the manner in which the City of Escondido rent control ordinance was applied.

St. John has published in professional journals on tax law, estate tax planning, real estate law, and professional ethics. He has served since 1989 as a Temporary Judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court.

St. John participated in the State Bar Conference of Delegates (now known as the Conference of Delegates of California Bar Associations) for sixteen years. He served as chair of the Los Angeles County Bar delegation, and he served on the Conference Board of Directors where he helped draft the bylaws for the newly independent organization and served as head of the Legislation Committee.
