EDUCATION: ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE IN CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION

Joan understands school finance, facilities, curriculum, and the need to work with the entire education family to realize sustained improvements. Nothing is more important to our democracy and the economic future of our state.

HEALTHCARE: ADOPT AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE, QUALITY HEALTHCARE

Joan supports universal healthcare coverage that preserves the provider/patient relationship and focuses on prevention rather than accute care. Comprehensive healthcare should be a right, not a privilege.

ENVIRONMENT: FIX THE DELTA

The Delta is the heartbeat of California. It is a valuable environmental resource, provides water to 20 million people, and contains the delivery systems that supply natural gas and electricity to Northern California. Yet, it is one natural disaster away from being California's Katrina. The solution must start with protecting the environment and ensuring a clean, safe water supply.

CONSUMER PROTECTION: ENFORCE QUALITY STANDARDS

We must do a better job of protecting families by ensuring clean drinking water, safe food, and higher standards for imported toys and over-the-counter drugs. Our safety net is fraying and we need to repair it.

TRAFFIC: IMPROVE ROADS, AND EXPAND MASS TRANSIT

When parents spend hours commuting in bumper-to-bumper traffic, pollution increases, and equally important, the time they have to spend with their children decreases. We can fix this problem by improving our roads, expanding mass transportation alternatives and pursuing smart growth initiatives.
