I am a Chinese American who speaks both languages fluently. I retired from San Diego Unified School District last summer after three decades of teaching. I have taught the developmentally disabled, the gifted and talented, and many levels in between. I spent the last 12 years teaching middle school science. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Science in Computer Technology, and have earned five teaching credentials: K-12 Multiple Subject; General Science; Computer Concepts & Applications; Gifted and Talented Education; and a special credential (SDAIE) for teaching English learners. While teaching, I was chosen to participate in many special programs designed for science teachers. I am proud to have received a certificate from then Vice President Al Gore in 1997 on environmental education; I also studied about climate change under Dr. Richard Somerville, a principal investigator on the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), who won the Nobel Prize with AL Gore in 2007. I was nominated by two of my former students as a distinguished educator in the 2002 and 2003 Who's Who Among America's Teachers. I became politically active during the 2004 primary election, I registered Democrats in my Poway neighborhood when I didn't even know what `walking a precinct' meant. I went on to volunteer for the API for Kerry/Edwards campaign in Las Vegas. I also volunteered in Yuma, Arizona, and here in San Diego. In the past four years, I have remained active and worked hard in many local campaigns (Donna Frye for Mayor, Francine Busby for Congress). I have taken classes in grassroots campaign training from DFA, DNC and Wellstone Action! I am also a devoted animal protection advocate. Last summer, I became a citizen lobbyist for the Humane Society. I would like to help the Democratic Party build coalition with other progressive organizations. I am ready to work hard and help build a progressive movement right here in our county. |
