George Shirakawa Jr. is a 45-year resident of San Jose and the former Vice-Mayor and District 7 Councilmember in San Jose, California. He currently serves as Clerk/Past President of the Eastside Union High School District Board of Education and is a Senior Fellow in the American Leadership Forum. He maintains a strong reputation for his commitment and support of neighborhoods, schools and youth. As a City Councilmember, his record for improving the community and obtaining millions of dollars for schools and youth programs is unprecedented. George has served his community as a Board Member of the Franklin-McKinley School District and as Chair of the City's CDBG, Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund, Youth, Seniors & Neighborhood Services, Rules, JPA and Housing & Community Services Committees and as Vice-Chair of the City's Redevelopment Agency, Pollution Prevention Committee of Santa Clara County. He has also served on the Housing and Community Development Committee, Veterans Memorial Committee, San Jose Police & Fire Retirement Board, Police Activities League, Valley Transportation Authority Board, Homeless Task Force, Valley Transportation Policy Board, Association of Bay Area Governments, Community Coordinated Child Care Council, Inner City Games, City Year of San Jose, San Jose Conservation Corps and many others. In addition, he has served as liaison to the Civil Service Commission, Parks & Recreation Commission, Mobile Home Advisory Commission, Youth Commission and Small Business Development Commission. Prior to his public service, George worked as a youth counselor/community liaison as well as a football and baseball coach at Yerba Buena and Foothill High Schools. He also served in the United States Army Military Police Corps as a Sergeant. He has 4 children and 3 grandsons. |
