Through creation of market rate housing in our redevelopment areas, we will fast track desperately needed affordable housing. As a life long advocate for the homeless, no one believes more than I that the way out of homelessness and poverty is with a roof over one's head, a bed to lie one's head on, and a job to dream about going to in the morning to provide food for one's belly and sustenance for one's soul.
To ensure safe communities, Oakland needs strong development and creation of walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods as city building blocks. To this end, we as a community need to:

  • Revitalize downtown with jobs and retail opportunities. Our City Center should be a point of pride for food, culture and shopping; not a ghost town after 5 pm and on weekends.

  • Support practical use of historically industrial land with 21st century realities and successes learned from other successful cities. Mandela Parkway was beautifully developed but remains underutilized. We need a plan that brings business and people to this community, without adding to the air pollution that this community has long endured.

  • Partner with the labor, business, and development communities to help youth into permanent, living wage paying jobs.

  • Support new, blossoming neighborhoods by championing and helping retail and small business owners to set up and thrive. This City Council office will work with neighborhood groups to serve as a catalyst for community improvement.

  • Bring together developers, unions, social justice advocates, and City Leadership to jointly engage in economic development problem solving, job creation, job retention, and creation of access to public transit.

  • Implement a condominium conversion plans that protects long time residents and include a thoughtful, well-timed plan for relocation.
