Safety issues in Foster CityBy Patrick McKinnieCandidate for City Council member; City of Foster City | |

Creating a safe community is very important to me. I want to create a community that is both bike and walking friendly. One of my biggest concerns for Foster City and its residents is the promise of prevention, preparation, precaution and overall safety. With increased funding for volunteer emergency service organizations, I believe that our community could greatly benefit from additional services that are provided from organizations such as the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the reserve police department. With their help, I feel the City of Foster City could become a source of a variety of safety activities to educate not only children and young adults, but also adults and senior citizens + because everyone deserves the skills to protect themselves, and each other, from harm. Continuing along the line of safety improvement, several concerns have led me to believe that the residential areas of Foster City are in need of speed limit alterations. By lowering the speed limits in residential zones by at least 5 mph and installing speed-reduction devices where speeding is evident (within the 100 to 400 block of Beach Park Boulevard, for example), the city's effort could lessen everyone's fear of needless accidents and dangerous situations. By constructing lighted crosswalks in place of an intersection's unprotected sidewalk, Foster City could follow in the footsteps of other pedestrian-mined cities, such as Menlo Park and Atherton. |
