For well more than a decade there has not been enough practice and playing time to accommodate all who want to play team sports. This particularly affects our children and young people interested in soccer, baseball and football, the wholesome activities that help them develop physically and foster the concept of team cooperation as well as keeping them interested, occupied and out of trouble. We have no vacant land on which to create new fields and the fields we have are so intensely used they require "rest time" when they are unavailable for play. We must end the seven years of debate and move on. I believe the most sensible course is the one that provides the greatest benefit to the most citizens and that is the use of synthetic turf because it can be used almost continuously without the need to be regularly watered, fertilized or cut. Given our financial crisis the conversion would be slow and quite possibly some school fields might remain in grass. Lights for night play are already in use at Burton and Highlands Parks and this is sufficient for our needs. Except for use on the shorter days of winter, lights are needed primarily for adult night games and the fields that are currently lighted provide for this. My vision for San Carlos includes a sports complex east of 101 as we are able to develop new and stronger revenue sources. While there are other priorities to be funded first, as we are able to meet community needs and develop a budget surplus San Carlos would benefit greatly by having the additional options a sports complex would provide. |
