Candidate for
Council Member; City of Palo Alto

My family and I have called Palo Alto home for more than 35 years. During that time, I have long been active in youth and neighborhood activities. I chaired Committee 2000, which led to the reopening of Gunn High School in the 1980s; and served on the PAUSD school board when Jordan opened its doors again. My School Board tenure gave me valuable experience in making important long-term policy decisions while keeping a large and complex public budget in balance.

Professionally, I have degrees in history and economics from Yale and Columbia. As an economist, I directed a research division in the Federal Reserve System. Over the last 25 years as a strategic planning consultant, I have helped large multinational companies adapt to changing demographic, economic, technological and organizational challenges. I also worked extensively with governments, including San Francisco on their plans for Mission Bay, Anaheim, Portland, Sacramento and the California State Library.

My experience on the Palo Alto School Board (and my 25 year tenure as the Treasurer of a Silicon Valley research group) makes me comfortable with the budget oversight function. My planning work with a variety of sophisticated international businesses and large government agencies gives me valuable experience in constantly balancing the benefits of having a clear strategic vision with the realities of getting things done. I believe my experience can bring a valuable perspective to Palo Alto.
