Campaign PlanksBy John S. PostovitCandidate for Board Member; Monterey Peninsula Unified School District; Trustee Area 2 | |

My primary goals as a Monterey Public School Board trustee would be: 1. Develop top-quality schools that will help students learn the skills needed for college and careers. 2. Support elementary and middle school programs whose aims are to lead students to full literacy in English and mathematics. All other subjects branch from a solid foundation in these subjects. 3. Support both college-preparatory and vocational/trade programs at the high-school level, to meet the needs and interests of all high school students. 4. Educational programs must be developed with input from the experienced teaching staff. 5. There is a disparity in the distribution of experienced teaching staff among MPUSD's schools. A school's success relies partially on maintaining a core group of experienced teachers who give the school and its programs stability and increased success. I would ask district administration to look into the causes of this disparity, and look into methods of rewarding experienced teachers who choose to work in lower-achieving schools. 6. The Monterey area has become too expensive for those who work here to also live here. Both support staff and teaching staff find it difficult to afford housing and high staff turnover is the unfortunate result. MPUSD must look into ways to retain its most promising new staff. |
