I have resided on the Monterey Peninsula since 1958. I practiced law from 1958 until I retired in 1992. I have been very active in the community. I served on the board and as President of Monterey Peninsula Community Chest (Now United Way). I was one of the founders and served on the board of Pioneer House, the first Head start program in Monterey County. I was on the board and served as President of Monterey County Anti Poverty Council. I was one of a few lawyers who started a Legal Services Program, now Legal Aid Society and served on its board and as its President.Before this agency was formed individuals who could not afford lawyers had a very difficult time accessing legal services. I was one of a few lawyers who were instrumental in starting the Public Defenders Office.Before this agency was formed indigents who were accused of crimes had great difficulty obtaining effective legal services. I was one of a very few lawyers who supported California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA)when it opened an office in Monterey County. I served on the state board of CRLA. Before this agency opened farmworkers suffered from gross discrimination and had no legal services available to them. I was one of 6 individuals who founded Monterey College of Law. I served on the Board and taught there. This law school enabled individuals to obtain a legal education who could not afford to go to an out of County Law School. My late wife, Caroline Page, and I initiated the formation of the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation, and funded its startup with a large donation. I have donated significant sums to the Foundation since its startup. Before being elected to the Board of Trustees of MPC I served on the Board of Trustees of the MPC Foundation. In 1992 I was the recipient of the "Justice Gibson Award." This is an annual award to "The Attorney who has been selected for best representing the commitment to community service and the High legal and Ethical standards set by the late Presiding Justice of the California Supreme Court, The Honorable Phil Gibson. |
