Why is the issue of "districting" so important at this time?Districting This past spring controversy erupted regarding how trustees are elected for Monterey Peninsula College's Board of Trustees. Currently all trustees are elected at-large. After a study by a consultant, and an attempt at change, the incumbent trustees returned to the status quo. For some time all the trustees have come from the southern part of MPC's attendance area, Carmel, Pebble Beach for example. No one comes from Seaside or Marina, the part of the district experiencing the most growth and which is increasingly diverse. In the Community College League of California's publication for board candidates, the first bullet under "Board's Role" is: "Create strong ties to the community, the better to represent community interests."It is evident that part of this community feels that it's interests are not being well represented. The growth in this community college district is clearly in Marina and Seaside. In fact, MPC is developing satellite facilities on the former Fort Ord. It makes sense that there should be representation from this area. While the incumbents have done a fine job and certainly care about MPC, it is time to make a change to insure that MPC's Board of Trustees truly reflect this community. For this reason I am supportive of moving to district elections for trustees. |
