The Bill of Rights remains the best protection we have against tyranny.I will stand up for the Constitutional rights of Americans. We must repeal the Patriot Acts. We must never compromise our commitment to human rights and dignity for any and every person. I support the renewal of the Voting Rights Act. Free speech, short of direct calls for violence against innocents, is absolute. The right to be free of coercion and self-incrimination is absolute. The right to be free from torture is absolute. These rights apply not only to American citizens but, in the words of the Constitution, to "all persons." As a Christian I could never allow torture to occur in my name. Attorney-client privilege must be protected. The free media must be preserved. The first amendment means that people may practice any religion they choose, and that government must never promote or sanction one religion or another. Freedom of religion means freedom from religion, except that in the public sphere all views, including religious ones, can be expressed freely. Without the Bill of Rights, we are not America. Without human rights, we are not fully human. |
