Initial goals and objectives

By Michael Edward Morley, Sr.

Candidate for Member, Board of Education; Irvington Union Free School District

This information is provided by the candidate
As by now you are aware, I have decided to run for a position on the Irvington School Board. Following extensive discussions with school administration, staff, and members of the community, I have developed the following list of concerns/issues which I believe need to be addressed by the Board of Education, and will serve as the basis for my goals/objectives if elected.

1. Trust - There appears to be a level of mistrust conveyed by several members of our community which has become more prevalent and widespread in recent times. Maintaining or re-establishing trust and confidence is not easily attained, but I believe it can be renewed by:

(a) Open communication with all members of the community (i.e., regular specific meetings with discrete groups) and establish oversight committees where appropriate; (b) Televising board meetings for public access; (c) Completing projects which have been agreed to and funded without reallocation of funds (if funds are reallocated for specific immediate needs open public discussion mandatory); (d) Engaging community expertise; (e) Compromise and resolution of community concerns. Providing rational, logical basis for decisive decision-making; and (f) Working with village on initiatives which would benefit both administrations.

2. Curriculum - Continue to assess performance of educational programs such as the ELA, Math Trailblazers, Foreign Language study, etc. Continue to engage the Tri-state evaluation group to independently evaluate and implement suggested changes/improvements.

(a) ELA tri-state evaluation completed and changes being implemented based upon recommendations (b) Math tri-state evaluation for fall of 2007 (c) Analyze state testing results K-12 (d) Evaluate success of our Honor AP Program and possible expansion of the program (e) Evaluate results/benefits of the current phasing of certain grade levels (f) Continue with the current curriculum review rotation

3. Taxes & Budget - Endeavor to develop a fiscally responsible budget which will continue to enhance our children's educational experience.

(a) Move away from budget to budget analysis and begin to monitor actual spend v. budget requests. (b) Expand revenue producing programs such as the BOCES program, the Special Ed program and the preschool initiative. (c) Use my legal background to develop strategy with the school board attorney and village to successfully resolve litigation matters including HVAC dispute and tax cert cases.

4. Construction, Ground Repairs and Renovations -

(a) Complete all capital improvement items at high school which were either not completed or not completed satisfactorily. (b) Resolve any safety items as recently identified by the administration. (c) Develop an environmentally and fiscally responsible proposal to renovate our athletic facilities at the high school/middle school campus including, but not limited to, the drainage analysis and resolution of the drainage issue.

My overall motivation and goal is to continue to positively promote
our community's dedication to our children and schools with the ultimate goal of enhancing our kids' educational experience through academics, extracurricular activities and athletics. I believe every resident benefits from a strong, well managed school system.

I am and will remain open to all suggestions for goals not listed
and/or any modifications as the community, administration or staff would deem necessary and appropriate.

Best regards,

Michael E. Morley, Sr.
