Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Leo Wiegman

Candidate for
Trustee; Village of Croton-on-Hudson

Information is power. The more information we share, the better we are at solving the problems we face.

I have enjoyed every minute of being a Village Trustee these since being first elected in 2001. I love the real-world problem solving. I love learning so many new things--from the natural history of the Hudson River to the details of government grants and the rigors of the environmental review processes. I love helping the Village communicate its policies to the public and--just as important--helping the public explain its concerns to the Village. I love the opportunities to establish cooperative ventures with neighboring towns and the school districts. I really love working on the big picture--namely that of helping keep this region such a wonderful place to live, work, and play.

Finance: All up and down the state, the smallest units of government, e.g. villages, are being caught in a heavy squeeze to provide escalating services with what is in many cases a `fixed' or very limited revenue basis. We need to control the costs we can, be creative about the revenue side and look for ways to share the investments that need to be made with partners who have alligned interests.

Energy: On the energy front, I have been active for some time in how residents and instiitutions can learn to curb future energy appetites and diversify sources of energy upon which we rely. There are no silver bullets that solve this. I view Croton as "the little village that can" in this regard as a leader and trendsetter from undertaking energy audits to cooperating with the County on asset mangagement to working toward sustainable development practices. The new NYPA grant for a photovoltaic installation is one offshoot of these efforts.
