1. There is growing support for reform of the Rockefeller drug laws. What will you do to: a.) Initiate significant reform of these laws; b.) Provide adequate financial support for programs, on the community level, designed to cope with the impact of such reform?*

Answer from James P. Hayes:

I support strict anti-drug laws that give local District Attorneys the discretion to recommend sentences for all drug criminals. I also support increased funding for local drug courts and drug treatment programs to help break the cycle of drug dependency in our society.

Answer from Susan J. Grelick:

I would place emphasis on treating drug addiction by expanding the drug court programs; giving judges more flexibility on sentencing guidelines, programs for those leaving prisons. Reducing prison overcrowding saves money for treatment programs, but major drug traffickers would still face stiff and stringent sentences.

2. What programs and actions will you support to protect communities from the negative consequences of the state’s increasing dependence on gambling revenue?*

Answer from James P. Hayes:

New York state has a moral obligation to fund anti-gambling and gambling recovery programs. I have specifically voted for such funding and personally obtained grant funding for Jewish Family Services which operates WNY's most effective and efficient gambling recovery program.

Answer from Susan J. Grelick:

Local communities which host these facilities must be adequately reimbursed for not only physical costs (police, extra maintenance services) but also social costs, such as funding gambling addiction treatment programs. The local share should be raised when needed to handle issues associated with these facilities.
