Meet Mel Smith Hello my name is Mel Smith and I'm the Democratic Candidate for Assembly District 2. I was born in Iowa, my father farmed corn and soybeans. We moved to California when I was a child. My father and grandfather owned and operated a dairy and hog farm. As a child I learned the family motto; get up early and go to work everyday, I have practiced this teaching through out my life to this day. During my High School years I became interested in motorcycles and horses. Later in life I came back to horses. I now raise Quarter Horses and compete in Reined Cow Horse Competitions as a hobby. I am married and have three daughters and two granddaughters. My love for horses carries on in my family through one of my daughters who through her life has competed in various events and comes home victorious. I come from a generation where it was important to graduate from High School, with my mothers continued encouragement, I made it. My career spans thirty years as a successful owner of various medium size businesses. At age 18 I opened my first retail store, a Framing Contractor by 23 and a General Building Contractor by 25. I went on to build, own and operate Gas Stations, Shopping Centers, Affordable Senior Housing Communities and a Public Water & Sewer System. My experience covers Real Estate Development/Management, the Construction Industry and Retail Business Ownership. My most proud accomplishment was affordable housing for seniors in Dunnigan, Ca. With my analytical ability I am able to find effective solutions when faced with difficult situations. I am positive I can make a difference if elected. I am currently Chairman of the Dunnigan Advisory Committee, a member of the National Stock Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association and the National Reined Cow Horse Association. I have the interest of the people in mind and will work towards the goals they set. I believe in a strict "Balance the Budget" government, pay as you go, not"Borrow and Spend Economics". It's time for a smart government in Sacramento. |
