CA Archives and Library accessibilityBy Gail K. LightfootCandidate for Secretary of State; State of California | |

Strenghten California's librariesCalifornia needs a vastly strengthened library system able to directly access the State Archives. Public support is needed to rebuild our library system so that local libraries provide the research materials needed by an informed electorate. Unless and until we recognise the need for maintaining the classic great works and historical books, we will continue to see our libraries stocking only the most frequently requested books rather than what reflects the history and culture that made CA a great state in a great nation. Populartiy is not the most important factor in stocking our library shelves with books, videos or other media. We must remember this in order to share the past with the future. Unlimited and free access to the State Archives and Library are a first step in this process. From there we can begin to think about improved literacy for all Californians. As important as individual responsibility is, the state does have an abiding interest in an educated population. Literary classes should be part of our public library and educational system so that all citizens are able to participate in their government fully. |
