Why Measure G is a good idea.By John E. JohnsonCandidate for Council Member; City of Lodi | |

Measure G will provide guaranteed funding for projects that have lacked funding for over 10 years. For over 10 years, our City Council has used a "wait and hope" approach to funding for paramedics, two fire stations, a swim complex and an indoor athletic center. Measure G moves from "wait and hope" to reality. Measure G would pay for all of these things through a 0.25% increase in our sales tax from 7.75% to 8.00% or $.25 on a $100 purchase for ten years. Over the ten years, Measure G will likely raise $35 million or more that can only be spent on items within G, nothing else. The items that are included in Measure G are: paramedics (up to $700,000 per year of six years); design and construction of fire station #5 which shall be located in the southeast portion of Lodi (up to $2,000,000); construction of the Lodi Aquatics Center (up to $9,000,000); design and construction of a replacement for fire station #2 which shall be located in the eastern portion of Lodi (up to $2,000,000); and, construction of a downtown indoor sports center (up to $9,000,000). All of these projects are $26.2 million. With $35 million being raised, Measure G will support these projects for many years, taking pressure off of our general fund. How much will this cost? It will cost the average household in Lodi less than $5 per month for 10 years and very likely less than $500 over the entire period. Best of all, the money cannot be spent in any other ways. Measure G requires a two-thirds vote and has an oversight committee to make sure the money is spent only as indicated. I wrote Measure G and I urge you to vote Yes on G. |
