Board Member; Carlsbad Unified School District

I was first elected to the Carlsbad School Board in 1998, and re-elected in 2002. In these eight years the Carlsbad School District has grown and continued to serve our students well.

  • Continually improve student performance and received local, state and national recognition for excellence.
  • Maintained an aggressive construction program, including:
    Aviara Oaks Middle school
    Lancer Arena, the new gym, at Carlsbad High School
    The 26 classroom `3000' building at Carlsbad High School
    Pacific Rim Elementary School
    Jefferson Elementary School, demolition and re-build
    Calavera Hills Elementary School
    Calavera Hills Middle School
    Carlsbad Village Academy
    Poinsettia Elementary School (to open in 2007)
    Continued planning for renovation of Carlsbad High School and to build another High School
  • Maintained a fiscally responsible budget in difficult economic times, without teacher and staff layoffs.
  • Maintained Kindergarten through 3rd grade class-size reduction.
  • Implemented, and have grown, the Lion's Quest character education program.
  • Stayed current with state curriculum and text book adoptions.
  • In the last two years we have hired a new superintendent, and provided oversight and approval for three new Assistant Superintendents, three new District Office Directors, new Principals at 2 elementary schools, all 3 middle schools and Carlsbad High School, as well as new Assistant Principals at all Secondary schools.
  • Reviewed and revised all Board and District policies.
  • Successfully worked with the Carlsbad Police Department to expand the School Resource Office program from elementary through high school.
  • Developed a District Vision with support and input from the community.
  • Approved District Core Values of Integrity, Respect and Excellence to guide us as we continue our work to serve the needs of Carlsbad students.
