Meet Steve

By Steve Tate

Candidate for Mayor; City of Morgan Hill

This information is provided by the candidate
Steve Tate's personal background.
I'm Steve Tate, age 62. I've lived in Morgan Hill since 1977. I am serving the last year of my second four-year term as an elected member of the Morgan Hill City Council. I am retired from IBM, where I spent 38 years in various marketing and planning roles.

I've been married to Jennifer for 39 years; she is currently a Personal Trainer at the Fitness Formula and has been a downtown business owner and past Morgan Hill School Board Trustee. She is currently serving as president of the MH Historical Society. She is also president of the Centennial Committee in charge of celebrating Morgan Hill's 100 years of being a City. The Committee is in process of producing several festive events for the centennial celebration. She was also selected by the Chamber of Commerce to be Morgan Hill's "Woman of the Year" for 2006.

We have two kids. Our daughter Stacy is married to Keith Huddleston, and teaches 8th grade at St. Mary school in Gilroy, where she was Gilroy's "Educator of the Year" in 2005. They have two kids, 8-year old Jared who is into baseball and will be trying football this year, and 5-year old Kylie who does karate and soccer in addition to charming grandpa. Our son Greg is also married to a Jennifer Tate, he works in the business software arena, she works for the Gap and they live in San Francisco's Marina district where their house is undergoing a remodel currently.

I'm an avid runner, and have completed about 15 marathons plus a 50 mile run to celebrate turning 50 back in 1994. I love all sports, especially Giants baseball. Jennifer and I spend the month of March in Scottsdale, AZ where we attend Giants spring training games, we also get to some games at AT&T Park. I enjoy reading, primarily fiction, and also enjoy time at the beach. We love to spend weekends at our Pajaro Dunes condo, especially in the milder winter months.

I'm a member and past-president of the Morgan Hill Rotary Club. I am a strong supporter of youth leadership activities in Rotary, and I participate annually in the scholarship recipient selection process. I'm a member of the Morgan Hill Chamber, which I support through the Ambassador program, and of the South County Democratic Club. I am serving my second year as President of the Leadership Morgan Hill Board of Directors. This Board is very hands-on, so it takes a lot of time, but is very fulfilling as our program for emerging community leaders just gets better every year. I was appointed this year to the Board of Directors of the Housing Trust of Santa Clara County, a prestigious organization that is really making a difference on housing affordability in our region.

Serving as a Councilmember is rewarding and also demanding. In addition our regular Council meetings and frequent additional workshops and constituent meetings, I chair the Council Financial Policy Committee and serve on the Council Public Safety and Community Services Committee. I also serve on the County Library Joint Powers Authority (JPA) Board, the City/School District Liaison Committee, and the Santa Clara County Emergency Preparedness Council. Finally, I work closely with our Youth Advisory Committee and our Library, Culture and Arts Commission in a Council liaison role.

I love Morgan Hill, and enjoy working on making it the best community possible
